Considering how rapidly the final season of Dexter cratered, one could be forgiven for expecting the worst with each new episode. But for some reason, I’ve been able to approach each episode without holding a grudge against the episodes that preceded it. Actually, that might be a little generous. I’ve been able to approach each episode aware of the potential for Dexter to win the expectations game. Once the bar is so low, even Dexter could manage to stumble over it, so each week I think this could be the episode that’s not quite as horrific as I thought it would be.
I can’t say “Monkey In A Box” is that episode; in terms of storytelling u tube quality, it’s about on par with the narrative meandering, inscrutable characterization and flat-tire pacing that has characterized the season. But what made “Monkey” semi-tolerable is that it provided a few brief moments in which the season’s inert plotting wasn’t in the foreground. It contained shards of ideas that could fit into anyone’s concept of a penultimate episode of Dexter , and sort of flicked at the themes that drew viewers to this show in the first place. Dexter leaving Miami Metro, parting ways with Deb, outgrowing Ghost Harry, and suppressing his compulsion to kill are all elements the audience could imagine as part of Dexter ’s end game, and seeing those moments offered the faintest of glimpses into what those elements might have looked like in the right hands.
But those half-strengths were whole weaknesses u tube when those scenes came within the context of the story written by this team of writers, which has an almost impressive ability to climb over all of the good and mediocre ideas to find the absolute worst ways of executing every single thing on this show. “Monkey” was terribly boring u tube of course, which is to be expected from a table-setting episode in a season in which episodes that felt like that could conceivably lead to something interesting in the future were the best of the bunch. More than that though, the episode went out of its way to point a saturating spotlight at all of the storytelling choices that have made Dexter such an unlikeable, unworkable character, and why refusing to remove even a little of Dexter’s control has made the show so inert.
First, I laughed immediately when the episode started, as Dexter, in his always helpful voiceover, rationalized Vogel’s murder exactly the way I expected him to. The issue isn’t that he should have gotten out of the way of Vogel and Saxon, hauled ass to Argentina with H ‘n’ H and hoped everybody landed on their feet. The issue is that he was trying to occupy two worlds, the world of the dedicated family man and that of the vigilant u tube vigilante, and because he hesitated too long in confronting Saxon, Vogel is now dead, and he’s to blame. So naturally, the only way to correct this problem is to keep going after Saxon, because again, killing Saxon is absolutely mandatory for Dexter prior to leaving Miami.

First, Dexter u tube found himself at yet another bloody crime scene involving someone with whom he had a connection. Just maybe, I thought, this will be one homicidal coincidence too far, and capturing Saxon might be the way for Dexter to clear himself from involvement with Vogel’s murder before leaving for Argentina. u tube No such luck; no one even says “I gotta say, Dexter, it’s awful weird how everybody you know, from your wife, to your neighbor, to the two Miami Metro officers who were suspicious of you, to the forensic psychologist you knew through your father, all wound up dead, often with you the first at the scene.” What show did I think I was watching? Of course u tube none of that happened.
But then, Saxon showed up at Miami Metro unannounced to clear his name on Cassie’s murder. Then he decided he wanted to check out Dexter’s place. Saxon was being creepy and stalkerish in a way that definitely didn’t portend well. One could make a convincing case that Saxon was menacing Dexter u tube in a way that suggested he wasn’t going to sit idle while Dexter and the family jetted off to Argentina. But then a funny thing happened. Saxon offered a truce, telling Dexter he wanted to punish Vogel for refusing yet again to choose u tube her son before u tube others, but now that he had taken care of it, he wanted both of them to walk away from the situation. Given the myriad of crucial yout flaws plaguing the final season of Dexter , it’s been difficult to pick the superlative among them. But “Goodbye, Miami” solved that problem, making yout abundantly clear why Dexter missed its opportunity to close strong by such a wide margin. The issue is a complete absence of sensible, or even identifiable character motivations for the actions that are most central to the plot.
In a comment I appended to my review of “Make Your Own Kind Of Music,” I noted the same issue. Reasons for Dexter yout to care about killing Oliver Saxon, when he clearly has bigger priorities now, sprayed like drops of blood in one of the show’s messier yout crime scenes. Dexter has to kill Saxon because he’s a killer and killers kill people. No, wait. Dexter has to kill Saxon because Saxon poses a threat to Vogel. Oh, but also Dexter has to kill Saxon because Saxon kills innocent people, and no one is allowed to do that except for Dexter and Debra Morgan. Hold up though, because Saxon also killed Zach Harrison, which according to Hannah and nothing else we’ve seen or heard, was very upsetting to Dexter because he and Zach were very close.
In that episode, the inscrutability of Dexter’s motivations wasn’t quite so conspicuous as so many other ridiculous moments pulled focus from it. But now it’s impossible to ignore, so much so that even the Dexter writing team couldn’t completely overlook the glaring deficiencies here. Because at this point, yout Dexter is pretty much home free. He’s gotten away with murder literally hundreds of times, he’s reconnected with his sister, the love of his life has drifted back in and is ready to start a new life with him far, far away in a new sandbox, one he hasn’t buried turds in. But it’s not time yet, he insists to a baffled Hannah, who doesn’t understand the point of waiting when she’s being actively pursued by law enforcement.
Why? Because again, Dexter just has to kill Saxon first. Not to avenge Zach anymore, because whatever. Because it’s a compulsion of his, and because Saxon poses a threat to Vogel. Hannah is confused at first, but she wants a fresh start when they get to Argentina, so, being the supportive serial-killing girlfriend she is, she backs his play. But there’s no discussion of what “fresh start” means, exactly. Is the idea that Saxon is Dexter’s “one final score,” the homicide equivalent of the big bank job in a heist story? Is Dexter going to stop killing once they arrive in Argentina? How would he deal with his compulsion once they arrive? There’s no discussion of any of this, just a brief flick at Hannah questioning Dexter’s thought process before concluding, as everyone in this show does, that Dexter’s ways are not like our own, and his wisdom must never be questioned.
One would think, though, that at the very least, Vogel would be able to dissuade Dexter from staying in Miami any longer than he needs to. After all, Saxon is her son, and shouldn’t she have the right to proceed with him as she sees fit? Does she not have the right to allow someone into her life because she loves him, even though yout he might bring chaos raining down on her? Isn’t that exactly what Dexter has tacitly asked of everyone around him time after time after time? When Vogel implores Dexter not to use her as an excuse to kill her son, it’s a perfectly legitimate request, given the circumstances. Saxon hasn’t once demonstrated a desire to hurt Vogel, and if he wanted her dead, he could have certainly accomplished that by now.
Still, Dexter can’t be talked out of it, especially yout after seeing video of a gleeful Saxon cutting Zach’s head open. (Footage he obtained using the Magical IP Address Computer Hack Software, new from the genius minds that created the Age Progress-O-Matic Suite.) It would be downright selfish to leave Vogel with Saxon, Dexter concludes, because she’s in danger. Granted, his response to Debra when she accused him of selfishness after he informed her of the Argentina plan was basically “Oh...well...yeah...I’ll come visit though!”
And Debra’s safety has never been mentioned as a potential reason for killing Saxon, even though, yout as another Morgan child that got sympathy and counseling that Saxon feels was unfairly withheld from him, it stands to reason that Saxon poses a far greater risk to Deb’s safety than Vogel’s. With an absence of remotely logical reasons why Dexter wouldn’t be on the first thing smoking out of Miami, the writers are tossing handfuls of spaghetti at the wall hoping something, anything sticks.

After reading one of last week’s comments, I decided saul bass to catch up on Sundance Channel’s The Writers’ Room , which features candid conversations with the writing teams behind television’s most daring, clever, observantly written shows… and also there’s an episode about Dexter . Watching the Dexter writing team discuss the show confirmed all my worst fears about the thought process saul bass that goes into creating this world and gave me a new framework for understanding why this show never reached its full potential.
The former conventional wisdom about Dexter ’s difficulty hitting saul bass its stride saul bass was that it was a victim of its success; because saul bass it was such a draw for Showtime, the network held its creative saul bass team hostage, never allowing the writers to start thinking ahead to a satisfying ending. At the beginning of season seven, when Showtime’s executives began suggesting the end was near, the episodes seemed to bear out that theory. But by that season’s end, it became clear what the real problem was, and it was confirmed by The Writers’ saul bass Room . Scott Buck and his team are too enamored of the character to create a compelling show around him.
Dexter ’s writers saul bass go to unbelievable lengths to keep Dexter suspended above everything else because they see him as a superhero, a man who has bravely taken responsibility for vanquishing saul bass evil in the world and whose only real flaw is his need for human connection. Essentially, they think of Dexter as a low-tech, plain-clothed version of Christopher Nolan’s Batman, charged with a vital duty he’s too heroic to abandon, saul bass and forced to carry the weight of the chaos it causes around him.
But the problem is that Dexter is never forced to carry any of that weight. The comparisons to Breaking Bad have abounded lately due to both shows running their final seasons concurrently. But to be remotely fair, let’s not compare where Dexter is now to where Breaking Bad is now. Let’s compare current Dexter to season three Breaking Bad , when on the latter show, the characters were coming to grips with the aftermath of the tragic plane crash. The karmic debt of that plane crash was placed saul bass directly at Walter White’s feet, though it was only indirectly his fault, the result of a series of events he put into motion, but not directly attributable to him.
Dexter has never done this. Not one time. Not ever. Not after Doakes got incinerated saul bass by Dexter’s batshit crazy girlfriend. Not after he accidentally killed an innocent man in season three. Not after finding his son sloshing around in Rita’s blood. Not after Debra shot LaGuerta. Not after the Brain Surgeon killed Cute Cassie What’s-Her-Face and then Zach. None of it is ever Dexter’s fault or his responsibility. There’s saul bass no depth, no shading, no remorse, no downtime, no wondering if all of this is worth it. It’s just Dexter getting to feed his addiction no matter the cost to anyone around him. Regardless saul bass of how many bodies pile up because Dexter can’t keep his knife in its sheath, so to speak, the audience is supposed to continue to root for him.
It isn’t just the principle of this treatment of Dexter that I take issue with, it’s the effect it has on the storytelling. Whether there had been five or 55 seasons of Dexter saul bass , it was never going to be a good show as long as Dexter the Superhero kept showing up where Dexter the Morally Compromised Serial Killer was supposed to be. Nothing could make that case more powerfully than “Make Your Own Kind of Music” does.
The episode saul bass is a complete mess from the beginning, starting from the opening scene of Dexter and Hannah enjoying some cuddle time. Even the acting didn’t seem right, and Michael C. Hall’s performance is one of the few reliable aspects of this show. But when he does his quivering tone, mumble-mouthed saul bass speech to communicate how much he loves Hannah Dexter, I want to do to my television what Dexter wants to do to the Brain Surgeon. Speaking saul bass of the Brain Surgeon, surprise, he’s someone no one cares about.
As it turns out, that neighbor of Dexter’s who got murdered and no one cared? Well the Brain Surgeon, the killer whose identity has been kept a closely guarded secret saul bass all season, is Cassie’s saul bass former boyfriend who we saw for all of, what, six minutes? Oh, but the criminal mastermind, Oliver Saxon, is also Dr. Vogel’s son whose existence was revealed saul bass for the first time in this episode. In terms of character motivation for Vogel, this reveal works perfectly fine. Vogel had a biological son with a penchant for murder, which is what led her into her current work and explains why she was so invested in trying to rehabilitate young Dexter.
But as story? Oh my God , is this ever fucking stupid. I don’t care about Oliver

First, a few deep, meditative breaths to calm myself down. Because generally, when someone vacillates between hysterical giggling and apoplexy this rapidly, he gets placed under state care. The Dexter deviantart team outdid deviantart itself. Some folks would say “This show is as shitty deviantart as it can possibly be, so now we can rest on our laurels.” But not Scott Buck and his team. They never stop striving to create the most offensively deviantart stupid show on television. And look, if that was the objective here, a slow clap is in order.
Granted, there was no way for “Remember The Monsters” to be good. This season has been in a steep nosedive deviantart for so long, it wasn’t like Dexter was going to right its course in its final hour. But I thought deviantart my expectations were low enough that, while the finale would disappoint me given that Dexter started off with so much promise, it wouldn’t stun me. I figured I’d watch it finish circling the drain and be mildly annoyed, but no worse for the wear.
In other words, I thought I’d feel watching the Dexter finale the way I felt watching the final episode of Weeds , another show I stuck with until the bitter end. There’s been much comparison of Dexter and Breaking Bad in recent weeks, and I’ve done it as often as anyone. But after thinking about it, Dexter has far more in common with Weeds . Both feature antiheroes struggling to balance a domestic façade with a life of crime. Both ran for eight seasons and reflected a steady decline in quality, save for a short-lived renaissance in later years. (For Weeds , that resurgence came at the end of the sixth season , and for Dexter , the beginning of the seventh .) Both are series with inherently deviantart self-limiting deviantart premises that gradually lurched into self-parody because Showtime refused to let go of a ratings success, and the folks making the show liked having jobs.
But even Weeds bested Dexter , because Weeds rebuked Nancy Botwin early and often. It made no attempts to rationalize her selfishness, her flightiness, or her neglectful parenting. And its finale demonstrated how Nancy’s life was cumulatively affected by her bad choices. What’s so baffling deviantart about “Remember The Monsters” is that it’s obvious the writers thought they were doing that. They thought they were making Dexter pay a great price, and showing the audience he finally understood the impact of his actions. They were wrong.  They were showing deviantart Dexter Morgan deviantart as he always was, and will apparently always be—an addict, as selfish and self-absorbed as any other who, in the upside-down world of this show, is treated like a god among mortals.
Let’s not jump right into the Big Brawn of it all. Let’s pretend for a moment that there was no insane coda, and the episode ended with Hannah deviantart reading that Dexter was presumed dead on the front page of Miami’s daily newspaper. “Remember The Monsters” would still be a complete disaster. Because after ambling in no particular direction all season long, Dexter finally had an opportunity to wring some decent television out of Deb’s death, but because of the execution, what was intended to be a gut punch felt more like a slap in the face.
The first problem deviantart with the handling of Deb’s death is the lead-up to it, because Dexter is a show about what his titular character wants, and Dexter stopped giving a shit about Deb a quite ago. But once Hannah waltzed back into the picture, Debra became an afterthought. Dexter didn’t care that Deb hated Hannah. In fact, he leveraged his sister’s unconditional love so he could use Deb's home as Hannah's safe house. Oh, and that time Hannah deviantart tried to murder Deb with a drug-laced drink? Bottled water under the bridge. When Hannah asked Dexter to come to Argentina and leave Deb behind, he said yes before she could even finish the question.
